You Can’t Not Communicate.
Hilariously awful, tacky or misdirected, signage out in the wild is all over the quality map. Your design cop is on the beat — and issuing tickets :)

Mural Arts Tour
Field notes from the 2021 #SEGDconf walking tour of the Mural Arts Program, in Center City Philadelphia. In just a few blocks centered around City Hall, a peek through alleys and spaces between buildings reveals much about the soul of the city through murals.

Brissago
A look-back at my Brissago summer: five weeks with great teachers and a fantastic group of fellow students, a hopelessly picturesque setting, hikes up to medieval hill towns on weekend mornings, my first Italian weekend, and (gasp!) my first and only hitchhiking experience.

Rail Park
Pics and notes from the 2019 #SEGD walking tour of the Rail Park, in Center City Philadelphia. This gem of a linear park remakes an overgrown abandoned railroad bed into a contemplative walk through relaxed landscaping and local history. Sophisticated, unfussy design borrows elements from the weedy train tracks like steel and heavy timber, with elegant stands of waving grasses contributing to the airy, elevated feel of the park.

Children’s Museum Sign
The Children’s Museum sign, installed on a historic Houston Street department store façade, was a specialty piece of signage designed to delight. With its splashy colors and spinning toy elements, the bracket sign borrowed from vintage signage of Houston Street’s heyday, and reflected the sophisticated design of the children’s play space within.

Party Invitation
Every designer loves doing ephemera. Those time-sucking, money-losing, last-minute, low-budget nightmares - they are in fact truly the love projects, where personality can win over protocol. This invitation is one of my favorites, for close friends and long time clients Alamo Architects.

Reading Terminal Market
Early in my career, when I worked in Center City Philadelphia, Reading Terminal Market was a frequent Saturday morning diversion. Get a bite to eat, have a wander among the tourists and locals, and take home the best local produce in town. Having recently visited, I’m happy to report it is only getting better with time.

City Hall Banners
In 1982, as a baby design intern in Philadelphia, I answered an open call for banner designs for City Hall Courtyard. My entry won! Which was beyond exciting. I followed the process of making and installing – from chatting with the crew of middle aged ladies cutting and sewing in a second floor workroom, to watching the riggers put them up on installation day.
